Dear Lola,

One of my coworkers has the worst habit of napping on his lunch break. Instead of going to the break room and eating lunch, he prefers to put his head down on his desk and nap. He even has a small pillow! I find this habit to be annoying and have said so to the employee. He merely shrugged his shoulders and said he could do what he wants during his break. I am thinking of approaching my manager to make a complaint. There is just something so off-putting about an adult who acts this way. I don’t know what is so hard about staying awake during the day. I’ve discussed it with a few friends and while they acknowledge it is odd, they said I shouldn’t say anything.

Sincerely,

Naptime Naysayer

Dear Naptime Naysayer,

Wow, oh wow, is there a lot to unpack here. First, you have the Rogue Napper, hellbent on wrecking the lives of all those around him using his superior napping skills. Then you have the Naptime Naysayer, diligently walking the halls of the workplace, looking for anyone in need of a waking up. No nap time is too sacred for this vigilante of justice! In fact, even the slightest hint of a snore will have the Naptime Naysayer immediately at your elbow, prompting you to act like an adult and walk around in a haze of sleep deprivation like the rest of polite society.

Well, this madness ends right here, right now!

When exactly did your company give you nap time policing powers?! I’m genuinely interested in what this position pays and where I can apply for the job. Spreading misery might not be a job for everyone but if the pay is right…

Do you see how ridiculous your complaint sounds?

Breaks are given to the employees for their own personal use. If your coworker wants to use his to nap, then that is what he uses it for. At no point in your letter did you state a valid reason to stop the naps – such as this office being a customer facing entity where clients would see this ‘unprofessional’ behavior. Obviously your manager has zero problem with the napping or it would have ended by now.

Perhaps indulging in a daily nap would improve your disposition towards your coworkers.

I truly hope you give this some thought because sleep is an important aspect of a well-functioning society. The only other option would be that you enjoy making your coworkers unhappy because it is a trait of your personality.

Take a nap and see how you feel afterwards.

♥Lola♥
