I recently went to Subway for a delightful sandwich. For those unfamiliar with this establishment, they make custom sandwiches while you stand in front of them looking both perplexed and overjoyed at the sheer number of choices in front of you.

What exactly is a banana pepper, and why does it go on a sandwich?!

That’s a mystery that will never get solved. There is another mystery that has been solved, that of the bag variety. You see, Subway uses long plastic bags to hold your delicious sandwich. Plastic is no longer a socially acceptable container if other options are available. Luckily there are paper bags – very easy to use and even easier to recycle.

Not to mention the paper doesn’t stick to you in ways that baffle the laws of physics.

Imagine how excited I was to see that my local Subway shop had moved from plastic to paper. The environment was so happy I could practically hear the sea turtles thanking me as they swam by! I was happy to never have to peel the plastic off my hands as I fought it into the trash. The worker was happy because the paper version was so much easier to slide the sandwiches into. The universe was at one with itself.

Then it happened.

The customer in front of me was handed her paper bag. I’m not sure what broke inside of this woman’s mind, but it was an ugly sight to see. As the curses started coming out, it was everything I could do to hold my laughter in. Imagine loving a plastic bag so much that you feel the need to defend its honor in front of a room full of strangers who are stuck behind you just waiting for their turn to pay.

Please move along, my sandwich is calling out to my belly.

After another five minutes of berating the employees on all the ‘political bullshit’ over plastic, I was at my wit’s end. Obviously, the workers are trying to keep their jobs and can’t say anything outwardly rude to shut her up. They’ve tried to shuffle her along, but this bag aficionado wouldn’t budge.

I decided to be the hero all of the sandwich lovers needed.

I told her to write to her Congressman and get out of my way. I was slightly worried I might get slapped, you never know how people will react to a deadpan statement like that. Fortunately for my face, the lady seemed embarrassed no one was on her side and left quickly. Then came the highlight of my week – they gave me three free cookies as a thank you!

Do a good deed this week, you never know when someone will hand you a cookie as a reward.

    1. I was just totally flabbergasted. And it’s so bizarre because our county is in the run-up to a ban on plastic so all of the retailers are swapping over now so they can beat the deadline. This is not shocking to anybody who lives around here, and yet this lady made it such a huge event.

  7. Firstly, you lost me at subway. My kids like it but it makes me gag even walking in there – no idea how they make bread and filling so disgusting…but I digress. I’m glad you got free cookies and I’m glad you got her out of the face of the probably under minimum wage employee. They don’t earn enough to have to deal with that. Lastly, the actual issue – our supermarkets just got rid of plastic bags and the whole country lost their sh#t. It was insane. Over a decade ago we were in Denmark and they had already banned plastic bags – imagine that? A whole country could manage. Anyway, now we’re all on board but the carry on to get there was so ridiculous and frankly embarrassing. Just adding to the pile of how backwards we are in world standards. In pretty much everything. Pretty sure our subways are just paper and have been for years tho…so that lady better not travel here for a holiday….

  12. Well done for speaking up and getting free cookies too! They are the best thing about subway. I feel sorry for that lady obviously in the midst of a very public nervous breakdown – that’s the only rational explanation I can see. Or having a very very bad day. Where I live they’ve supposedly banned plastic bags, which is great, but it seems to depend which shop you go to as some don’t seem to be enforcing the new law very thoroughly. #globalblogging

I’m not exactly sure why this lady was hell bent on defending the plastic bag when it’s common knowledge the damage it causes to our planet and it’s inhabitants but I do want to point out my own concern for using paper bags. The trees. We stopped using paper bags because we recognized the importance our trees play to keeping us breathing so why go back to them? I mean, I do understand the recycling bit but I am concerned for our oxygen providers. It just seems like we are swapping one environmental hazard for another. I’m genuinely curious on your opinion on this Heather. Maybe you see or know something I don’t. Almost every store in my town has gone back to paper but Subway, alas, has not made that leap. At least not yet. #GlobalBlogging

    1. I was worried about the trees also until I realized that all paper products made in America are from forests that are specifically planted to be cut down. They aren’t native forest to an area, they are planted specifically on commercial lots. Many of them exist in Georgia and even my state of Washington has numerous lumber lots. So they can’t just cut down whatever they feel like cutting down, it’s very tightly regulated to prevent deforestation in the US.

            1. I use that phrase often when people complain about laws. Either get involved in politics and try to make a change, or zip your lip. But complaining to a fast food worker is not going to get you anywhere but frustrated.

              1. Yes I agree. At the end of the day the person behind the counter taking your order doesn’t make the rules. So please be kind to them. Often times they make min wage if that and are at the bottom of the totem pole. A little bit of respect goes a long way for them.

    2. I feel that I should add a caveat which is that paper products made outside of our country are not likely to be as tightly regulated. Especially if it’s coming from China, they do not have a very good record for protecting the environment. So if they cut down all their forests, obviously that also affects our ability to have oxygen in the US. So I think it’s key that we keep some of these industries in our area so that we can regulate them to our standard.

  14. Oh my god free cookies! I would have skipped out of the store and down the street. There is nothing better than being given something for free (extra good when it is confectionery) and all because you did what everyone else was only dreaming of doing.
