Today I’m sharing a dish that was one of my favorites while growing up in Hawai’i. This is a fairly simple recipe, consisting of a marinade that most people in the islands have perfected to their individual tastes. Feel free to add and subtract at random until you find the combination that makes you happy. The marinade should cover up to 10 pounds of meat, which sounds like a lot until you start eating – it goes very quickly!

Kalbi BBQ Short Ribs

2 cups shoyu (soy sauce)
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup water
3 stalks green onions, chopped small
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 TBSP ginger, minced
(jar garlic & ginger works fine)
Beef short ribs (up to 10 pounds of meat)

Large saucepot

In a large pot, combine all ingredients except the meat.
Bring mixture to boil over medium high heat.
Allow marinade to cool once it boils.
Pour marinade over meat in a sealed container and let sit in refrigerator overnight.
Barbecue the short ribs until fully cooked.

Superhero Tip: Serve with sticky rice.

Second Superhero Tip: If you cannot locate short ribs in your store, ask the meat counter if they can cut them for you. I’ve found that most stores will do so upon request.
