From a very young age, kids crave cereal. It’s the miracle food that makes everything better. Saturday morning cartoons are more vibrant when a bowl of cereal is sitting in your lap. Marshmallows are also a crowd favorite, usually involving games of how many can fit in a 4-year-old mouth at one time. Combine cereal and marshmallows and you get nirvana. This recipe is commonly referred to as a Rice Krispy Treat, but since that’s a trademarked name, I had to assign a generic name to my own version which has an extra ingredient for additional yum.Recipe

Crispy Rice Cereal Treats

3 TBSP butter
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
6 cups puffed rice cereal
10 oz. marshmallows (Miniatures melt the easiest)
Cooking spray

Large saucepan
Rubber spatula
13 x 9 baking pan

Melt butter over medium heat. Add in marshmallows, stirring constantly.
Once marshmallows are melted, mix in vanilla extract.
Stir well and remove from heat.
Add rice cereal to pan and stir until coated.
Pour mixture into a baking pan that has been coated with cooking spray. Spread mixture evenly and then cut into squares once cool.

Superhero Tip: Sprinkle miniature m&ms over the top of the warm (not hot!) treats. Press down gently to ensure they stay in place.

Second Superhero Tip: Drizzle melted chocolate over the top of the treats once they are cooled. Or coat the entire top of the pan if you feel like chocolate is the secret to happiness.
